Nama Goodyera diambil dari John Goodyer, seorang botanis, sebagai penghargaan kepadanya. Deskriptornya adalah Robert Brown pada tahun 1813 yang dipublikasikan di William Aiton's Hortus Kewensis.

Genus yang hidup secara terestrial dan beberapa dijumpai epifit ini dikenal dengan sebutan The Net-Leafed Orchid, Rattlesnake Plantain, Jade Orchids atau Ladies' Tresses.

Lebih dari 120 species telah dideskripsi. Sementara terbagi ke dalam 2 seksi, Otosepalum dan Goodyera.
